An Adventure On The Backroads Of My Mind

I was driving from Louisville, Kentucky to my Virginia residence (not to be confused with "home") over the last weekend in February. As y'all know, once "polecat blood" gets into your veins, driving is a matter of extrasensory perception; eyes follow the wires and roofs, truck follows the road. Well, I was just about through this little ol' town when my eye catches something unusual on a rooftop. "OH, XXXX!!" I think to myself, "CHAMBERS!! A whole rooftop full of CHAMBERS!!"

My road-weary mind kicks in: "Trees right on the edge of the road, can't pull off here. That "companion" is surely dark, could it be dark green -- or maybe -- BLACK GLASS?"

Several oncoming cars and the rear view mirror shows a car and a BIG truck behind me. "I've got to get turned around. How many "candlesticks" did I see -- how long was the ridgeline? That's a large house." A church ahead. I pull into the driveway to turn around. "That dark green companion could be AMBER! WOW! The first ever -- amber Chambers! Where did all this traffic come from? More cars than on Election Day."

Back on the road again. "Had to be at least six candlesticks. There's the house ahead, where can I pull off?" I spot a driveway almost opposite the house and pull off? Camera with a 280 mm telephoto lens is in the camera bag on the seat beside me (never leave home without it). At last, pictures of a roof full of Chambers. "If anyone wants to pull into this driveway, he's just out of luck. Hope the owner of the house is not looking -- probably shoot me for a 'peeping Tom'. Sheriff might not be too thrilled with me standing here in the middle of the road taking pictures of someone's house; especially since I don't know the owner -- or anyone else in town for that matter."

I get the lens cap off. Be cool. Great -- the dark "companion" and "candlestick" are skylined. Focus on the upright nearest the road. "WHAT??" The Chambers turned to PINCO's right before my eyes. "The amber companion is BAKED MUD!" Sweep the ridgeline with the viewfinder -- "the candlesticks are also BAKED MUD!" Some polecat (a polecat by another definition) has been here before. I casually return to my truck, carefully replace the camera, express my opinions to the wind, ease out onto the road, and drive away from the sunset. "Oh, well, the hardware was real Chambers -- Big Deal!

"Hey -- look at the H.K. Porters. Must be at least four to a crossarm...."

The Chambers which turned out to be MUD!
